The Singapore Wombettes have taken out their second Asian Championship, overpowering a brave Cambodian Asparas outfit in the final of the Women’s Division.

After a tight first half dominated by both defences, Singapore got their game going in the second half and peppered the goals, running out winners 9 – 0.

The Wombettes celebrated their Championship win with gusto in the middle of the ground, joined by the men’s team.

The Women’s Division of the AFL Asian Championships continues to grow with some exciting local talent coming through the ranks. And no team highlighted this growth more than the Cambodian Asparas

With the biggest representation of indigenous players – a testament to the club’s development work – the Asparas went through Round 1 undefeated, accounting for the Indonesian Volcanoes, Thailand Tigers, Barbarians and Hong Kong Dragons.

They faced the Volcanoes again in a semi final, running out comfortable winners 24 – 0.

In the Grand Final against the bigger Wombettes, the Asparas’ mosquito fleet relentlessly chased, gang tackled and harassed in a tight first half. Their tough and wily small forwards attacked the ball hard but couldn’t get past a resolute Wombettes defence.

All seven teams in the Women’s Division put it all on the line in 2024 in a hotly contested competition.

Another team to watch is the Malaysian Warriors, who fought hard in their semi-final against eventual champions the Wombettes, falling short 13 – 20 in a high quality game.

After conceding the first two goals to Singapore, the Warriors hit back with two goals of their own to level up the scores off the back of strong work by their talented midfield.

Things got very willing as Malaysia pressed with players on both sides throwing themselves into the content.

Scores were level at full time, forcing extra time to be played. Malaysia’s quick young midfield came out of the blocks and kept forcing the ball forward, but weren’t able to convert. Against the run of play, a great snapped goal just before the bell got Singapore over the line.

With a number of new players, the Hong Kong Dragons were aiming to feature in the finals but fell short after a tough draw, playing all four semi-finalists in Round 1. Their best result was a strong 19 – 7 win over the Indonesian Volcanoes, but it wasn’t enough to qualify for the semi finals.
