The Jakarta Bintangs relationship with the Mama Sayang Orphanage is entering it’s 12th year and has been a wonderful partnership that has allowed the Bintangs to invest their support, compassion, aid and assistance back into the local community.

The Bintangs have also provided English teaching opportunities and a football pathway from Auskick to playing in the senior ranks and have effectively created a footballing factory that’s reaped the rewards for the club and more importantly for the orphans themselves both on and off the field.

Former Jakarta Bintangs President and current long-serving AFL Indonesia Chairman and AFL Asia Advisory Board Member Paul Halliday highlighted the importance of the club’s relationship with the Mama Sayang Orphanage and the key outcomes for both the club and the local orphans by saying;

“We love our relationship with the Mama Sayang Orphanage as it gives us an opportunity to give back to the community and help the young boys who haven’t come from much to grow into young men who are leaders and provides them with a pathway to a successful life.”

“Our club also assists them into the workplace often helps to find them jobs, which is a mutually rewarding outcome for us as a club and the orphans and management from Mama Sayang Orphanage.”

Many of the orphans have gone onto represent the Indonesia Garudas, the AFL Asia Lions, Jakarta Bintangs and the Indonesian Volcanoes whether that be via the three yearly AFL International Cup, the All Asia Cup, Asian Championships, Shanghai Cups, AFL Curtain Closer Clashes, general tours and local domestic leagues.

“Over 80% of the Indonesian Garudas team that participated in the 2017 AFL International Cup have come through our pathway program with the Mama Sayang Orphanage, which is a credit to the players themselves and our players and coaches who have supported and mentored them for many years.” Halliday said.

The young Indonesians have thrived under the tutelage of the Bintangs hierarchy and leadership group and have become a key component of the Bintangs family, which has seen the club become one of the leaders in the local development sphere.

It was fantastic to see the Jakarta Bintangs back at the Mama Sayang Orphanage on the weekend and we’re sure the love and care was well received and reciprocated.
