KarMun Cheah – Singapore Wombats
‘Footy is such a fast-paced game with multiple things happening at the same time. It’s incredibly fun to get in the midst of it!’
After recovering from snapping ‘a few important ligaments in my foot’, KarMun is raring to go at her first Asian Championships.
How did you start playing AFL?
I met one of the players through mutual friends who explained the sport to me. I didn’t understand a word he said! But I decided to give it a go when he told me there was a women’s team in Singapore. I got connected with one of the girls and started my AFL journey in April 2023.
Did you play other sports before AFL?
I played soccer through high school and university but took a break from sports when I moved back to Singapore. Finding the Wombettes came at a great time – I had been looking for a team sport to get involved with that had a great community.
Who taught you the skills and rules of AFL?
Major props to our women’s team coach Harry, who took me on as a complete newbie to the sport. AFL never existed in my vocabulary a month before joining this team! I learned a lot from training, the girls with more experience, our amazing captain Mac and watching some footy.
Did you find AFL skills difficult to learn?
It’s a complicated game, definitely, but with clear fundamentals such as handballs, marks and kicking to score. I found the contact aspect the most challenging – learning how to tackle and fall!
What do you like most about playing footy?
The chaos! Footy is such a fast-paced game with multiple things happening at the same time. It’s incredibly fun (although sometimes stressful) to get in the midst of it. I’ve never watched or played anything like this sport before.
What is the most exciting moment you’ve had in a game?
My first mark! It happened in my second-ever Aussie Rules game. I got so excited that I ran the wrong way! I eventually turned around to make the kick in the right direction. The run in the wrong direction was a major faux pas, but equally hilarious.
Have you played in the Asian Championships before?
No, 2024 will be my first time, I’m really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t play in 2023 due to an injury from getting tackled – a few important ligaments in my foot snapped. But I’m back on my feet and ready for this year!
What’s the best thing about representing Singapore at the Asian Championships?
A personal sense of achievement and to play alongside my teammates contributing to the international sports scene. This tournament provides a platform for both individual and team growth.
Have you ever been to a live AFL match in Australia?
I have not, I would love to watch a live match, especially after learning about this sport.
Do you have any favourite AFL or AFLW players?
I do not, but I have been told that I can’t support Collingwood!
What position or role do you play in your team?
I play in the midfield / wing / generally a tackling role!
