They came with a growing reputation as giant killers, but the Cambodian Asparas are now in unfamiliar territory as frontrunners after blistering performances on day one in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Asparas were almost unstoppable in big wins against Indonesia (58 – 2) and China (106 – 1), showcasing their renowned tough tackling and pressure, but also superb foot skills and ball handling.

Cambodia won the opening match of the Women’s competition 58 – 2 against Indonesia.

In the opening women’s match against Indonesia, Cambodia’s forward half pressure and structure behind the ball set up repeat entries and multiple scoring opportunities.

After power forward Touch Rith burst through two tackles for Cambodia’s second goal, it was mostly one-way traffic but still enthralling to watch the Asparas play with irrepressible joy. Their devastating duo of small forwards – captain Sreylak Koun and Sreyleap Khoun – relentlessly pressured and tackled and finished their work with brilliant snaps for goal.

Cambodia’s Puthyda Prom was relentless in her attack on the ball.

Indonesia never gave up and showed fantastic commitment in the searing heat. They opened the second half strongly but couldn’t capitalise on their efforts. Utility Tharisya Rizkindra Putrie gave 100 per cent for her team and showed moments of elite athleticism and skill, taking an outstanding overhead mark.

Cambodia is likely to come up against neighbour Thailand in Sunday’s final, after the Thais also recorded big wins against China (115 – 0) and Indonesia (83 – 0).

The Thai women have benefitted from an outstanding local development program, and it showed against a competitive but inexperienced China playing in their first international tournament.

Power forward Irravadee Makris hit every contest hard and kicked three goals in a  brilliant first quarter, while midfielder Sojirat Pradisom also showed serious talent and speed in scorching runs to set up multiple goals.

China fought hard in their international debut but were overwhelmed by Cambodia’s run and pressure.
