Thailand

Thailand tigers anzac 2015Hosting AFL ASIA’s longest running ANZAC Day tournament, The Thailand Tigers Australian Football Club will return to Kanchanaburi on Saturday 25th April, 2015 for the 12th annual ANZAC Commemorative Match. This year the Tigers will play the Myanmar Fighting Cocks, in what promises to be a fitting and hard-fought contest.

The ANZAC weekend is always the biggest event on the Tigers’ calendar, and with game day falling on the 25th this year, all players have been putting in big efforts at training to earn selection. As well as several handy new recruits, ex-Tigers are coming from as far away as Hong Kong and Australia to honor the ANZAC spirit.

The game promises to be a physical and testing encounter, with both teams aiming to build momentum for the Indochina tournament later in the year. Myanmar has already beaten the Cambodia Eagles in 2015, and have been training strongly at their new ground in Yangon. The Tigers will be looking to maintain their record over the newer club, after beating them in a very physical game last year in Myanmar.

Following the Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass, players and a group of ExPOW’s will treck to the game. Especially in the 100th year of Gallipoli, is Hellfire Pass is perhaps the most significant Dawn Service for WWII.

This year will also see a junior Auskick clinic and game occur before the senior match. This will be run by the Bangkok Auskick group, who train and play on a regular basis. Children up to 17 years of age are welcome to come along and try Australian Football, and can do so free of charge.

The day is a great honour to be a part of, whether spectating, volunteering or playing, a fact not lost on Tigers coach Patrick Fitzgerald. “It’s always a special privilege being able to play an Anzac match in a place with so much history, and in front of people who were part of that history” said Fitzgerald.

The game is played at Visut High School, Kanchanaburi, with ample seating, merchandise, food and beverages available at the ground. The game starts at 1.30pm; it’s free entry and all are most welcome to attend.
