Joshua Pilic, known as Sway, is a 27 year old multi-sport athlete from Caloocan City in the Philippines, playing for Batang Cangcalo.  Sway’s sporting journey and life took a turn when one of his friends invited him to try AFL.

How did you first start playing AFL?

I started playing AFL two years ago. My friend and rugby teammate invited me to try footy training during the first week of April, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

At first, I thought it would just be training for fun, but the moment I stepped on the field, I felt something different. Footy challenged me in new ways, and I realised how much it brought out my strengths—both in the mental side of the game and in teamwork.

For me, footy isn’t just a sport anymore—it’s a brotherhood and a passion that keeps pushing me forward.

What does it mean to represent your country at the Asian Champs?

It means a lot. Representing the Philippines is a huge honour, and I feel proud to wear the national colours.

Last year, I was blessed with the chance to play in the championship, and it became one of the greatest experiences of my life. This year, my journey feels even more meaningful because for the first time, I’ll be playing side by side with my real older brother.

Which team are you most excited about playing against at the Champs?

I’m most excited to play against the stronger teams. The opportunity to compete against countries like China, Japan, and Cambodia is thrilling. I never imagined the game would take me this far, but here I am—grateful, motivated, and ready to give everything I have.

How much are you training in the lead-up to Champs?

I’ve been training hard both on and off the field—joining team training sessions regularly and also working on my personal weaknesses like kicking and fitness.

Who are some players from your team in good form recently?

A few of my teammates have been really impressive lately, especially those with more experience. They’ve been stepping up during training and setting the tone for the rest of us.

What is your position or role in the team?

I usually play a role trying to apply pressure, win contests and support my teammates wherever I’m needed.

What do you like most about playing footy?

I love the competition and the physical side of the game. I enjoy testing myself against tough opponents and learning from every game.

What is your most exciting moment in a footy match so far?

One of my most exciting moments was when I laid a strong tackle and got rewarded for it. It felt great to help the team shift momentum and get recognition for my effort.

Is AFL a growing sport in The Philippines?

Yes, AFL is slowly growing in the Philippines. More people are getting interested, especially athletes from other sports. I hope more Filipinos get to try footy and see how fun and challenging it is.
