The Cambodian Eagles Australian Rules Football Club is the leading expatriate football team in Cambodia with players and supporters from Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, England, America and beyond.
The Cambodian Eagles is not just an Australian Rules Football Club (AFL) but it brings together expatriate and locals by hosting a wide range of events.
The year 2011 heralded a new phase for football in Cambodia with the approach to the West Coast Eagles as an affiliated club.
As chance would have it, members of the Eagles squad were touring Cambodia as part of a leadership program, and the then Cambodian Cobras made approaches to meet and host the group while in Phnom Penh. These meetings resulted in a now growing relationship between the two clubs and have allowed the Cambodian AFL team to court sponsors to lay the foundations for a permanent presence in Cambodia.
As part the agreement with the West Coast Eagles, the Cobras changed their name and colours to that of the Eagles. The Cambodian Eagles then joined the Asian Championships in Bangkok in 2011- the first time that Cambodia has been represented at this tournament – and the first time that the Cambodian team played under the Eagles name and colours.
2012 was a successful year for the Eagles with wins at home against Vietnam and Malaysia in March; a close match against Thailand for ANZAC Day at Kanchanaburi in Thailand; and two wins from two games against Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City during July.
The Eagles had a great trip to Hanoi for the Indochine Cup with 2 wins and 1 loss. The final game against Thailand/Laos was a real thriller with just a few points difference.
