The number of passionate and committed local AFL players continues to grow throughout Asia. We profile a few who are pumped about representing their country in Aussie Rules at the Asian Championships in Thailand.
Josh Passaribu – Bali Geckos
‘I’m not shy to ask – when Jordey De Goey came to practice in Bali, I asked him how to hold the ball and kick a goal correctly. I imitated it and it worked!’
Josh started playing AFL in remote Balikpapan on the east coast of Borneo Island. Now living in Bali, the veteran has played in AFL tournaments in China, Vietnam and Thailand.
Who taught you the skills and rules of AFL?
My first coach at Borneo Bears taught me how to play and the rules, but I learned from everyone. I’m not shy to ask – when Jordey De Goey came to practice in Bali, I asked him how to hold the ball and kick a goal correctly. I imitated it and it worked!
Did you find the skills difficult to learn?
At first yes, but if you have ball skills from soccer, basketball, futsal or volleyball you can adapt quickly.
What do you like most about playing footy?
When I score goals and tackle opponents who are bigger than me.
What’s the biggest highlight you’ve had playing footy?
The most unforgettable was when I played and scored several goals in Shanghai, China for the Asia All Stars versus China. There were thousands of people at the game and we played in a beautiful stadium.
Have you played in the Asian Championships before?
Yes, the first time was in 2016 and then in 2022 and 2023.
What’s the best thing about representing Indonesia at the Champs?
The best thing about representing Indonesia was when we won the All Asia Cup at HCM in 2016. I was very proud to be part of the Indonesian team and prove that we can play.
Have you ever been to a live AFL match in Australia?
Yes I have watched live AFL matches in Australia twice at the MCG. It’s a very impressive, very big stadium!
Do you have any favourite AFL or AFLW players?
My favourite player is Jamie Elliot. I really like him because he is not very tall but he is great in marking contests and a speccy specialist.
What position or role do you play in your team?
My position is to play as a half forward or as a winger.
Are you also on track to play in the first AFL Asia Cup in Ho Chi Minh in December?
I hope I play in the first AFL Asia Cup in Ho Chi Minh in December and Indonesia wins it!
