The Malaysian Warriors and Malaysian Warrior Women celebrated their 30th year anniversary in style as they both recorded spirited victories against the Singapore Wombats and Singapore Wombettes in Game 1 of the Changi Cup on Saturday.
The Wombats and Wombettes had their first opportunity to travel outside their burrow for two-and-a-half years as they took on the Warriors on their home deck and both games lived up to their highly anticipated billings.
The Women’s game was a highly competitive and close encounter, with the Warrior Women scrapping home in a thriller against the Wombettes 5.6 (36) to 4.8 (32).
Both women’s team are expected to feature prominently come October at the AFL Asia AFLW Asian Championships, with the Warrior Women the most recent AFLW Asian Champions and the Wombettes finishing an admirable 3rd in their debut campaign in 2019.
The AFLW sides put their differences aside after a close battle that saw the Warriors prevail.
The Men’s game was an absolute see-sawing arm wrestle for the first three quarters, with the final quarter best described by Warriors Club Legend, former influential President and Life Member and recently appointed Coach Shaun Di Gregorio.
“A one point margin at three quarter time then saw the Warriors kick five unanswered goals in the last quarter to storm home to win by 33 points, 94 to 61″, stated Di Gregorio.
The boys were all smiles after the siren.
