The growth of Women’s football was on display and at it’s finest during our 2nd edition of the AFLW Asian Championships and was highlighted by an increase from four teams in our inaugural tournament in 2018 to 6 teams on Saturday, as well players who filled in from Indonesia and the Philippines.
AFLW Team Numbers Grow All-Asian Squad Size
Last year’s inaugural All-Asian AFLW Asian Team consisted of 12 players selected from the Cambodian Apsaras, Hong Kong Dragons, Malaysian Warrior Women’s and the Vietnam Lady Swans, whilst in 2019 we increased the amount of selected players to 20, given that the Singapore Wombettes and Thailand Tigers were added to the 2nd edition of the AFLW Asian Championships.
There’s certainly been an improvement in the overall standard of games played and the players’ level of knowledge and understanding of the game amongst the entire Women’s football fraternity, as well as their skills and strategic prowess.
AFLW Asian Footy Skills Reach New Heights
There’s an enormous amount of quality and depth within this year’s 2019 All-Asian AFLW Asian Team, which highlights the rapid growth and momentum that exists within women’s football in Asia.
If this passionate and determined 2019 All-Asian AFLW Asian Team were to take the field they’d be highly competitive and well led by AFLW Cross-Code Trialist and supremely fit and focused match-winner Lyndsay Clarke (Captain, Playing Head Coach, Malaysian Warrior Women’s), strongly influential leader and 2018 AFLW Asian Champions Coach Chia Sabbatucci (Vice Captain, Playing Assistant Coach), as well as terrific on-field leaders in their own right in Asian-born Srey Nit (Deputy Vice Captain, Cambodian Apsaras) and Irish product Naomi Reidy (Deputy Vice Captain, Vietnam Lady Swans).
