MEDIA RELEASE
On 26 March 2015, the Governor-General of Australia, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove made a fleeting visit to Guangzhou on official Australian Government business.
After hearing about the development of AFL in Southern China, particularly through the great work of the Guangzhou Scorpions, Sir Cosgrove ensured he put time aside in his busy schedule to meet the leadership and management group for the Guangzhou Scorpions Australian Rules Football club.
Before meeting Sir Cosgrove, one Scorpions player was quoted “I am so excited, I couldn’t sleep last night. This is unbelievable.” In his opening remarks during an exclusive Yum Cha breakfast, Sir Cosgrove said he was deeply impressed by the commitment of the Chinese players and the dedication of the Guangzhou Scorpions management team in developing Australian Rules football in the Southern China region.
Sir Cosgrove pledged his full support to the Guangzhou Scorpions and said he was looking forward to one day seeing a Chinese player from Guangzhou playing in the AFL.
The Scorpions players had the opportunity to chat with Sir Cosgrove about their experiences with AFL in China and their recent trip to Australia for the IC14. Sir Cosgrove paid special tribute to all the sponsors of the Guangzhou Scorpions and noted that without their generous support, the great game of AFL in China would not be possible.
