Classy Wombettes win Women’s Division

The Singapore Wombats have taken out the 2022 Thai Expat Club Women’s Division in superb fashion in an AFLW Asian Champs campaign that was full of class.

After grinding out an admirable 4th place in their debut AFLW Asian Champs back in 2019, the Wombettes have since rolled up their sleeves, worked tremendously hard during the pandemic, and were determined to come back as an improved outfit, focused and ready to make a gigantic leap to the top of the mountain of Women’s football in Asia.

A statement win first up against the reigning champions in the Malaysian Warrior Women reassured the Wombettes faithful. A win against the Cambodian Apsaras in their second game further enhanced the Wombettes belief, however a loss against the AFL Indonesia Volcanoes created some solid learnings prior to the finals race.

However, a convincing 13 point revenge win against the ever-improving Indonesian Volcanoes in the semi final set up an exhilarating Grand Final match up for the Wombettes against the Malaysian Warriors. In an absolute arm wrestle for the ages the Wombettes were the only team to score as the sun was setting on the Bangkok Patana School Sports Complex, with the Singapore Wombettes winning 1.1 (7) to 0.0 (0).

The Thai Expat Club Women’s Division was a fiercely fought division with the Malaysian Warriors, Indonesian Volcanoes, Vietnam Swans and Singapore Wombats all registering 2-1 records after their three preliminary games, whilst the Cambodian Apsaras got reward for effort with a surprise win over the Vietnam Lady Swans and finished with a 1-2 record. Despite a 0-3 campaign by the hosting Thailand Tigers, they finished with a victory by defeating the Apsaras in their 5th vs 6th playoff.

The Singapore Wombettes are fast becoming a powerhouse of Women’s football in Asia, with plenty of sides ready to snatch that status off of them. The biggest winner to come out of the Thai Expat Club Women’s Division is the growth of AFL Women’s football, with the standard of football on the rise, the combative nature of the players as strong as ever and the players thirst for knowledge and of the strategic nature of the game a highly noticeable and welcomed set of outcomes.
